Record labels seem to feature in the business news an awful lot these days and not always for the right reasons. Whether it's a reference to Universal Music Group acquiring another independent label, or stories of massive job cuts at EMI, there's no escaping the attention given to this sector. However, stories about failure, re-structuring and decline in the record industry, have been around since the early 1980's. Does the record business have a future and should we regard these stories as anymore relevant today?

Cinenema Firebomb Radio Records May 26th This is the second single from the critically acclaimed long player Bland Bland Bland by the Leeds Based outfit. The quartet make anti pop which has received play across Europe and college stations in America. The Track is an intense wail of disco beats, discordant guitars and knock out lyrics. It is pretty good but it is never earth shattering but they are better than the Snow Patrols of the world, which they are to be commended.

Let’s talk about it Full Time Hobby Out now Fresh from SXSW festival success, the Austin based outfit release this attention grabbing slab of garage rock. It is taken from their self produced debut album and it was recorded in a vintage trailer in Texas. On the strength of this single, the trio will be gaining a wider audience with their Minuteman via MC5 Punk.

Joe Lean and Jing Jang Jong Newcastle Carling Academy 2 06.05.08The hyped London quartet have been making quite a name for themselves on the back of couple of singles.Ex Pipettes drummer, Joe Lean is amiable frontman veering between annoying posing and cool rock swagger. What about the songs, well they all blur into one and variety is lost amongst the Razorlight/Libertines-esque tunes. I think the main point is they aren’t massively life changing but they are pretty good but they never take it to that next level, they are never exciting. Track closer, Where do you go? is a powerful end to the set and highlights they have a few killer tracks in the armoury. Whether they have what it takes to go the next level and not been an amusing blip in indie history depends on festivals and their long awaited long player out in August. Critical Mass | Listen Here Ponyland Records Out Now
The Scratch release their long awaited new single Critical Mass after last year’s single 'Numbers' walked straight on to many University radio playlists and was added to playlists on Orange Radio, 2XS, CRMK Radio and dozens more. A succession of live acoustic sets followed on radio shows around the UK, culminating in the band playing an acoustic set on XFM and also appearing on Channel M TV late last year. The band can now name check Clint Boon (XFM) as a fan of the band, after he appeared on TV with the band to rubber stamp what the bands fans already knew as the band were crowned XFM’s Unsigned Band of the Year. |
