Before The Bench | Click here to listen The impassioned working class Salfordian Punk n' Soul duo The Deodates' new single and iTunes exclusive Double A-Side single release ‘Before the Bench/Hippy Crack (Live)’ is out now on Taboo Music. Gary and Tom create raw music with an emphasis on memorable hooks and melodies, taking inspiration and influence from Prince, The White Stripes, Marvin Gaye, The Clash, Curtis Mayfield and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They formed in April 2006 and following an inspired rash of song creation, recorded their eponymous debut EP just two months later. Imagine Prince in a punk band or perhaps Al Green, if he discovered the electric guitar instead of God. The duo setup forces a rethink of expected song structures at times but those unforgettable hooks remain. The Deodates are by no means steeped in Biblical praise; their musical offerings are for the tired and expectant youth, ground down by soulless imitation and everyday humdrum. For those who just want to dance, wear their heart on their sleeve and reaffirm this thing called life. Salvation is at hand. The Deodates acknowledge the legacy of their hometown, and hearts and minds must march forward and give the area something to answer for again. www.thedeodates.co.uk www.myspace.com/thedeodates |

The Brightlights | Click here to listen Winners of this year’s much publicised Road to V competition and Grimsby’s most famous musical export, The Brightlights, leap into the spotlight once more with their debut single, ‘Inspired By released on Distiller Records on 5th November’. The song is about growing up in a dead end town and the choices that face its youth - whether to slide into a life of lethargy and crime or to try and do something positive and take responsibility for yourself and your actions. The B Side, ‘Stops and Starts’, deals with first impressions and judging people, often wrongly, in an instant. The video for ‘Inspired By’ was shot in Grimsby and directed by Jay Burridge, who won a CAD for his art direction on Hot Chip’s ‘Boy From School” video. He found The Brightlights on myspace and was so impressed that he contacted them directly to offer his services. Rising star and friend of the band, Tommy Turgoose, who stole the show as troubled pre-teen Shaun in ‘This Is England’, will feature in the video. The Brightlights, aka Leon Blanchard (vocals, guitar), Adam Featherstone (bass), James Buxton (drums) and Luke Parker (keyboards, bvs), †- all 18† met when they formed the midfield of a successful local youth football team. Indeed it was only a serious injury that stopped singer Leon going on to turn professional, such was his talent on the pitch. Luckily for him, and us, Leon is also blessed with a great voice. The single will be limited to 500 7” vinyl only. It will also be available to download. The Brightlights will be playing the following dates: 12th October- The Civic Centre, Immingham www.myspace.com/thebrightlightssound † |

Bigger Than Me | Click here to listen Kris Morris grew up in a coastal town just north of Sydney in Australia. It is a quiet and peaceful place but the call of the bright lights of the big city beckoned and hence a move to London seemed almost inevitable. Citing influences such as Bob Dylan, Neil Finn, Ray Lamontagne and Ryan Adams, the sound that Morris has crafted is a dynamic mixture of country, folk and blues. Throw in themes of hope, faith and redemption, and the result is a bunch of memorable tunes delivered with masses of passion. Kris himself explains, “I had the songs I wanted to record which I’d written through the last half of 2006. The songs sum up a season of my life which in some ways I’d prefer to forget but in retrospect I know did me a lot of good. Its a pretty honest little EP but there are glimpses of sunshine in there - just a little light you might say.” 'Bigger Than Me' captures the heart of the journey - hopes, fears, tears and that little glimmer you catch when you can sense the way out. 8 Oct 2007-BBC Radio Bristol Session, Bristol, 17 Oct 2007-AAA Awards, London, 18 Oct 2007-The Space, London, 3 Nov 2007-Going North Productions, Leeds. www.krismorris.com www.myspace.com/krismorrismusic |
