Days of Wonder for Jon Hollins
Written by Paul Le Hat
Tuesday, 13 May 2008 12:03

Jon HollinsLancashire drummer and songsmith Jon Hollins has announced the forthcoming self release of his debut album 'Line In' on his Gothic Box label with the indie/rock of 'Days Of Wonder' as the first breakout track. After drumming and writing for Northwest bands such as Beware The Green Monkey, The Mirrors, Battenburg Pig and The Futile Bros, Hollins went solo in 2005 to focus on guitar and recording. Many of Jon's former bandmates and collaborators feature throughout the thirteen tracks, some new and some previously gigged and demoed. Indie, rock and electronic influences make up Jon Hollins' cryptic sound in tracks such as 'The Eye In The Sky', with tracks such as 'Dark Sister' and 'Darkly Park' revealing the strong acoustic roots of his music.

White Lies

White Lies
Newcastle Carling Academy 2
11/05/08

White LiesThe opening act on the NME new noise tour was the West London based hotly tipped indie act, White Lies. After getting abit of press from their old outfit, Fear of Flying, the trio are back and fully formed and ready to go with a renewed hope. They cut a set of dark figures on stage; the desired effect of gloomy outsiders is fitting. Their line of dramatic eighties rock is interesting but it isn’t groundbreaking but it feels does feel like they have a big sound to capture indie crowds. Some are of the tracks are shadowy dancey numbers which wakens the quiet early evening crowd as they expected some hip flash in the pan indie act. What they actually got was a band who are here for the long term and who could be the new indie hope in late 2008. They return to Newcastle on October 2nd @ The Cluny.

Travel Mind Syndrome

Donna | Listen Here

Travel Mind SyndromeTravel Mind Syndrome formed in 2004 under the shadow of the Athenian olive trees, well OK, there arent any olive trees in Athens, but a band did form. The idea that Travel could go beyond its own Hellenic walls occurred only recently when the band realised it was time for a dramatic change in style and approach. It was unanimously agreed that this drastic change was the only thing that would overcome their musical stagnation. Once they had all decamped to England the realities of the defunct rock scenes in Italy, Greece and Cyprus became a distant memory.

Travel Mind Syndrome combine its influences from their various birthplaces and blending 70s and the 90s under the prism of modernity. The effect of Muse, Coldplay and Porcupine Tree coupled with various individual influences is heard clearly in their unique amalgam of robust pop, rock and electro.

This Beautiful ThiefOliver Armstrong, Jon Hyde, Tobias Pearce, Ricky Whelan are all based in Birmingham but hailing from Newcastle, Reading and Sutton Coldfield, This Beautiful Thief are only 3 gigs and 1 recording in to their young career. Formed in December 07 they went straight into the studio in the new year which rolled on into April with 5 tracks recorded and into a support slot with the new and hotly tipped Zut Alors, then opening for the 'biggest indie band in Hungary' The Moog at the Hope And Anchor the day after. Rounding off a hectic first week of gigging with a show stopping performance and full house at the Rainbow in Birmingham supporting Hoi Polloi.
