Newcastle 02 March 11th 2010
Following up a successful debut album is never easy; it’s a cliché but true. The Brighton based duo were here to showcase tracks from their second album. I had only a handful of new tracks and you can’t judge them after one listen. So I was intrigued to hear the new material in a live environment and see if they have reworked the framework or modified a successful model.
Well, to be honest the new tracks are good and they are in the same vein as their debut album and they have some catchy songs in the new armoury and the crowd reaction was a fervent display of jumping up and down and going mad for the tracks. Older songs were aired as well and they got an equally amazing reaction as crowd went wild for their short sharp indie pop anthems. Sadly there were technical problems which marred the set as guitars went out of tune and made it stop start and it took the shine off the new album showcase and the success of the brand new material.

As part of this year’s AV festival you need look no further than the Newcastle based club night Road to Rimini. For four years now Il Fratelli Di Rimini have been bringing the Rimini sound to a variety of venues across the city. The jewels in the Rimini crown though have been the quarterly parties held at the Star & Shadow Cinema where acts like Legowelt, The Hacker and Heartbreak have made their Newcastle debuts. In between sorting out their own nights the Fratelli Di Rimini can be found deejaying at various pubs and clubs around Newcastle. At present a random assortment of Fratelli and cohorts can be found deejaying at The Tanners on the last Saturday of the month.

The UK Pop band return with brand new album 'Earth vs Pipettes' and its preluded by New single 'Stop the Music' released April 19th via Fortuna POP! Record.Since we last saw them they have lost Drummer Joe Lean to Jing Jang Jong as Rose Elinor Dougall and RiotBecki left for solo careers away from what the band term "self-manufactured pop".
The Pipettes retain a great vocalist in Gwenno Saunders, the lead singer on The Pipettes biggest hit to date "Pull Shapes" and living proof that the Welsh, from Jones and Bassey onwards, have the best pipes. Gwenno's sister Ani was recruited to reinforce that theory and Alex White (of The Electric Soft Parade and Brakes) completed the new line-up on drums.
